Project Summary

Why I chose to build IJN Takao as a historical tribute? IJN Takao was one of the most powerful and visually intimidating cruisers ever built by the Imperial Japanese Navy — and her story is filled with ambition, violence, survival, and decline. For a scale modeler, IJN Takao is especially compelling because her appearance and equipment changed dramatically throughout the war, reflecting Japan’s adaptation to modern naval combat. She Survived What Killed Others Many famous Japanese cruisers — Atago, Maya, Chokai — were destroyed violently. IJN Takao survived longer than most. In October 1944 during the Battle of Leyte Gulf, American submarines ambushed Vice Admiral Kurita’s Center Force in Palawan Passage. Her sister ship: • IJN Atago sank rapidly. • IJN Maya was also destroyed. IJN Takao herself was struck by torpedoes from the submarine USS Darter (SS-227). She was heavily damaged: • steering impaired, • flooding severe, • combat effectiveness crippled. But she somehow stayed afloat. That survival created one of the most unusual endings of any Japanese cruiser. Why IJN Takao Is So Powerful as a Model Subject? IJN Takao tells multiple stories simultaneously: • Japanese naval ambition, • technological brilliance, • aggressive doctrine, • adaptation under pressure, • gradual exhaustion, • final collapse. Few ships visually communicate WWII’s emotional arc as effectively as IJN Takao. I hope to share with the world how my model of a 1/700 IJN Takao captures: • the ship’s towering predatory silhouette, • the tension between elegance and brutality, • the sense of operational fatigue late in the war, • the overwhelming density of detail. I have chosen the recently released VeryFire 1/700 IJN Takao for this project as it is probably the most detailed IJN Takao model kit packaged in one box for that scale. Due of its layered structure, numerous anti-aircraft guns, and weathered late-war fittings, it will reward viewers with awe with ultra-fine detailing and dramatic lighting. To build, paint and weather an extremely detailed model ship at 1/700 scale within 4 months would be a huge and new challenge for me. The building and painting process will be highly complicated as model ship building cannot just follow the instruction manual. A master model ship builder takes time to plan the project to minimise errors as mistakes will be costly. Photo etch and 3D printed parts at 1/700 scale are extremely small and fragile, demanding patience, good eyesight and dexterity. I will showcase how Gaahleri’s quality tools such as airbrushes, mini compressors and paints, make the hobby enjoyable, accessible and help us create masterpieces.

1/700 IJN Type 96 25 mm AA gun crew

Test fitted the ProStudio gun crew into the Very Fire 1/700 IJN Takao Type 96 25 mm AA guns. This is indeed super challenging even with magnifiers. But I am very pleased to have done the transplant successfully. Will be painting the 1/700 gun crew next. Stay tuned!

My new Gaahleri Airbrush Holder

This is Gaahleri's Airhub Pro. I love it as it is both excellent in form and function.

The base is CNC-machined from a single block of aluminium and finished with an anodised surface treatment, combining rugged durability with refined desktop aesthetics.

It supports up to 4 airbrushes simultaneously. Universally designed to hold securely, no matter the brand or body shape. Photo shows my set up to paint my 1/700 IJN Takao Heavy Cruiser. My go to airbrushes are Gaahleri Aventus Tailor Made for detailing work and Mobius TG 0.3/0.5 mm for wide spraying work like hull spraying.

Try it as it is cool to have to complement your current set up.

50 Shades of Grey?

I don't have 50 shades of grey :) but these grey paints should be enough to post shade my 1/700 IJN Takao heavy cruiser as part of my weathering process.

References and research are important

Bringing out all some of my references to build a better model ship. References and research are important to me. It helps in story telling too.

1/700 IJN crew - super small

Sorting out my supplies of IJN crew for 1/700 IJN Takao. There are hundreds of them here from Triumph Model, ION Model and ProStudio. It will take a while to paint them but it will be all worth it.

1/700 IJN Takao

Did not have much time to work on the IJN Takao as I was busy preparing for a scale modelling workshop for cub scouts in Singapore. Anyways, this was what I did tonight.

IJN Takao Deck

[1/700 IJN Takao deck]

Someone asked how do I ensure small resin parts detached from the supports do not get lost and how to paint them. I use an ice cream stick, put double sided tape on it and then stick the parts in their relative positions on deck. Painting them this way is usually better than on the supports as the cage may block some angles. After painting, use a good pair of tweezers and glue onto deck with tiny bit of CA.

1/700 IJN Takao

The deck on this Very Fire 1/700 IJN Takao is filled with details even before AA guns and figures are added. It will be a nightmare of masking if the deck parts were moulded onto the deck. I think it is more fun installing one by one. After weathering and a flat coat, it will look awesome!

1/700 IJN Takao Deck Parts

Yesterday, I shared about deck parts that were smaller than ants. It looked like I pulled out the legs of ants or they looked like dumbells for ants. Today, I am pleased to share that I had successfully glued all of them on deck. Next will be easier, the ammo boxes. You may notice that painting these small parts to maintain the details require an airbrush with good trigger control and paint atomization. I think it is obvious which brand I am using. 😀

[1/700 IJN Takao Deck Parts] These vents on the deck are smaller than ants. Detaching them from the supports and cleaning up took quite a while. Happy none were lost.
