Project Summary

For this build, I’m tackling an absolute classic and one of my favorite planes from World War II: the Vought F4U-1D Corsair. I've always been drawn to the rugged look of these "Bent-Wing Birds". Rather than doing a pristine build, I want this project to be a genuine historical tribute to the aircrews who had to keep these heavy-duty machines flying in some of the most brutal environments on earth. Instead of the typical, clean factory-fresh look, I’m aiming for a heavily weathered aircraft straight out of the Pacific theater. I want to recreate the intense wear and tear these planes went through—think sun-bleached paint on the wings, heavy chipping around the cockpit walkways from pilots scrambling in, and deep exhaust stains along the fuselage. It’s all about capturing that gritty environment shaped by the tropical sun, salt spray, and harsh coral dust. I want to turn this out-of-the-box Tamiya kit into a real battle-hardened veteran. I love bringing out the grit in a model, and for this competition, I’m leaning directly into that specialty while pushing the micro-details even further with a mix of advanced techniques: • Scratch-Building: I'll be adding custom-made engine ignition wires for the motor and extra hydraulic lines inside the wheel wells to give the kit some real mechanical depth. • Hairspray Chipping: This will let me build up realistic, layered chipping, showing the bare metal and primer underneath the blue topcoat just like the real paint flaked off in the field. • Oil Paint Rendering: I’ll use oils to fade out the blue paint and create those subtle tonal shifts, helping build up that dusty, salt-crusted appearance. Over the next four months, I'll be sharing the whole process. I don't plan on hiding the messy, "ugly" parts either—you'll see the complex masking, the heavy sanding, and the technical headaches that come with scratch-building tiny components. I'm looking forward to connecting with everyone on the timeline, swapping tips, and seeing what everyone else is working on.

Tamiya Tape VS Decals- re upload

The kit supplies decals for the "surgical tape" used to seal Corsair fuel tank seams, but they lacked real fabric texture and depth. To get a more authentic field-applied look, I ditched the decals and laid down thin strips of Tamiya masking tape along the panel joints ahead of the windscreen, burnishing them tightly to the surface before hitting them with grimy washes to mimic fuel-soaked, Pacific-worn adhesive tape.

That is a great idea. I was considering spraying these as I didn’t realize what they were for. Thanks for sharing this. Great work, I hope mine turns out half this good.
