Project Summary

This future diorama depicts a defensive action near Kharkov, 5 March 1943, where a single 8.8 cm Flak 36 crew held a frozen country road against advancing Soviet forces. The build combines Tamiya’s Flak 36 kit with selective aftermarket details, two Kübelwagens, and an izba structure to recreate the harsh conditions and tactical geometry of a rural Eastern Front position. The project explores how machinery and environment can tell history through physical evidence — a silent record of endurance and discipline.

Week 12.2 — Elevation Arc Mechanism Assembly on the Tamiya 35017 — 8.8 cm Flak 36

***Look at those comments for a random fact!!***

The elevation arc mechanism is now taking shape, and this stage reveals just how intricate the 88’s fire‑control system really is. With the etched brass arc, adjustment wheels, and mounting hardware all brought together, the assembly finally reads like a true mechanical subsystem rather than a collection of kit parts. The brass wheels lock the geometry with a precision that feels engineered, and the arc’s fine graduations give the entire mechanism a sense of purpose and tension.

Each component was cleaned, aligned, and test‑fitted before final bonding to preserve the delicate spacing between the arc and the elevation gear. The metallic contrast between the brass and the surrounding steel structure adds a realism that plastic alone can’t achieve. Even unpainted, the mechanism already looks functional — as if the crew could step in, grab the wheel, and dial in elevation for the next shot.

This is one of those assemblies that quietly elevates the entire build. Once painted and weathered, the arc mechanism will anchor the elevation system and become a focal point for anyone studying the gun up close.

Biography

I’m a scale modeler focused on bringing World War II subjects to life in 1/35 scale through detailed construction, historical research, and grounded environmental storytelling. My builds center on the physical evidence of a moment—vehicles, structures, terrain, and the traces left behind—rather than dramatization. I enjoy taking solid kits and elevating them with careful assembly, thoughtful weathering, and selective aftermarket details to create scenes that feel lived‑in and believable.

Through my YouTube channel, 35th Scale Modeler, I share my process, techniques, and the history behind the subjects I build. Whether it’s armor, artillery, soft‑skins, or full dioramas, my goal is always the same: to recreate the atmosphere, texture, and realism of WWII in miniature and to keep learning with every project.
