Masking on the wings

I have already posted my update for this week, but there is so much work in front of me that I have to show another work now.

In parallel to the work on the fuselage I worked also on the wings. They were primed already white in the very first update so I now continue from there.

Pic 1 I also started two draw a lot of lines in the vector drawing software Inkscape. A wonderful tool to cut masks! That is so much work that the project could also fit into the design category :)

Pic 2 A huge amount of narrow masking tapes were applied on the rib tapes. I had to hurry because I was afraid the tape wouldn't be enough (joking)

Pic 3 With thinned MRP NATO Black fine shadows applied.

Pic 4 After removing the tapes I have now brighter rib tapes (more layer of linen on the original wing) and a darker space between.

Pic 5 The wings are painted bleached linen and white. I started to apply the freshly cut masks here.

Pic 6 All masks, also for the roundels, are applied.

Pic 7 For the blue I used Oxford Blue. The red dot is also painted. Some masks were removed.

Pic 8 The Oxford Blue is a dark blue, but not as dark as the Kit decals. Yeah, looks like "painted on", some words you read often about decals.

Pic 9 The stripes for the "yellow-orange" (according to my ref book) are removed and other areas masked again.

Pic 10 Here I used “Cadmium Yellow” by Drooling Bulldog. These paints are made according to original recipes using pigments from the World War I era.

To apply such masks you have to work very careful. My sheets are a bit sticky, so it takes a while to reduce the tackiness by touching them with your fingers/ hand.

Stay tuned!

@studio935 I found a sketch of all 4 sides on Facebook, which helps a lot. I tried to contact the artist but haven't got an answer. I have also not seen the famous, printed in colour (1918!), marketing brochure.

@robertpodkoski Yes, that's why this beautiful Camel was on my ToDo list for a very long time and I'm happy to have the chance to realize it NOW! 🥰

@bughunter I first saw this Camel in the fantastic Polish book on Great War fighter planes when I was 15, and this book triggered my interest in aviation in general :)

@robertpodkoski Then it is even more a pleasure for me to build exactly this biplane!

@mike Thanks! I hope so, but there is still a lot of work in front of me so there are also enough chances to ruin it 🤔

@dutchdavemodelbench Thanks! The shadows are not very strong. The original airplane don't show those I want to have it more interesting but still conforming to the reference pictures.
