Project Summary

The Gallo-Roman Town of Glanum: Scale Architecture Paper Model

Original name: Cite Gallo-Romaine de Glanum

Scale 1:200

Paper model showing Cite Gallo-Romaine de Glanum, made in France by L'Instant Durable in 1994

A precision three-dimensional paper model of the reconstructed town of Glanum, unique in the world. The cut-out model is built to a scale of 1:200 and consists of 520 pieces printed on 30 colored sheets of 30 × 22 cm card. When assembled, the finished model measures 44 × 84 cm at the base and stands 15 cm high.

The book includes a historical overview and description of the ruins, accompanied by photographs and historical engravings of the site. Step-by-step assembly instructions are provided in English, French, German, and Italian, with detailed construction notes and illustrations for each building.

The model features a triumphal arch, mausoleum, several houses, baths with a removable roof, basilica, forum, and temples. The roofs of the baths and one of the houses can be lifted off to reveal the interior layouts.

Upd 14 Final - Ancient Roman City of Glanum

Well, the final result of the assembly and completion of this project, the ancient Roman city of Glanum from the magazine of the publishing house L'Instant Durable, France, 1994.

The model was completely assembled from the kit with the addition of cardboard and trees that I bought separately. The kit contains some other buildings and elements that I may later complete outside the project.

As for the complexity, for those who have skills in working with paper models, there is nothing complicated, but there are a number of places and elements in the model where you can make a lot of mistakes)

Thank you for your attention

Upd 13 - Small Buildings and Trees

A little progress on small buildings, they are all quite similar and are placed in separate houses or groups.

Also, I found an option to upgrade the painted trees to three-dimensional ones, they may not match in size, shape and color, but on a diorama they will look much better than flat paper parts.

And finally, I released the first video about this project on my channel with an overview of the set, in the future there will be videos with the assembly:

Finally, the 2 large pieces of the puzzle are glued together, it wasn't too difficult, although the joints are a bit noticeable, maybe they can be masked a bit later with PVA glue and paint. Next, we can move on to the houses of the residential area.

Upd 11 - Roman Forum and Temple parts of the city before the connection

We have two large, almost completed parts of the city, the Forum with its pile of columns and the simpler Temple Square with its temples. Now we need to connect them into one whole and then we can continue with the usual buildings and estates.
Unfortunately, there is not much time left until completion and so much still needs to be done.

Upd 10 - Roman Forum with the Curia and Basilica

Finally I have connected the Forum square with the Curia and the Basilica. Now our main task is to add more details - various columns from journal and some additional details like the stairs which we take from the scan copy.

Upd 9 - Roman Curia and Basilica

It wasn't difficult to assemble these buildings individually, as they are rectangular in shape with a simple roof, but they have a terrace on the top level and walls, which made the process of joining them more difficult. But finally this part of the Roman city is ready and now we can connect it to the Forum and actually return to completing the work on the Forum, which needs to be placed in a lot of columns

Upd 8 - Basilique

Took a pause with forum because it has some complicated building on it and moved forward to nearby basilique which is simpler and more interesting in work, also it is two stage building

Upd 7 - Forum area

We got to the big forum, expecting it to be too complicated, but overall it's fine. Some bugs out of the box, some added by me. A lot of cardboard was used for support, but that's necessary.

Time for another section of the city. This area has no buildings, only minor objects and a wall.

Another temple is almost finished, a few more steps, and we can install them in the town square, which is also in the final stages.
