Project Summary

My plan is a mini diorama, with a 3D printed Elf riding a leaf bug. The base will be a hand sculpted forest-theme, probably with mushrooms and/or pine cone and other wild berries. Maybe i add a snail too, but first i must print/see the height of the Elf and the bug, every other detail depends on this.

Leafwalker : finishing the base part 2.

Hello everyone, continuing the upload, in this video you can see how I airbrush some more on the mushrooms, then brush on the terrain paste. You can see a few circular spots that I left out, that's where the beetle's legs will be glued on. But back to the making: After it dried, I started decorating with small tree branches, pebbles, glued the plants, grass, and moss to the base of the mushroom. The last step is to dust it with pigment powder and the base is done!

Leafwalker update reupload

ok, so in the video you can see how the base is made, starting with the mushrooms sculpted in Zbrush, which I printed, but before that I attached a branch to the base which I planted in urethane resin, then I planted the mushrooms in putty. Then I primed the whole thing in beige, then started painting with thin washes. I sanded the surface of the mushrooms back in some places using a reductive technique to create surface unevenness for an organic effect.

No matter how much I wanted to paint the armor in Non-metallic metal, no matter how many variants/colors I tried, it just wasn't right. The armor elements are too organic for NMM. So I painted it in True metallic metal, because the Kaleido colors on the beetle are so bright and shiny, it was the only variant that suited it. I achieved the antique, scratched and verdigris effect with washes and several layers of glazes, so now the Flashy Gold matches the bright purple-green colors of the beetle well. I think now the rider and his mount are in harmony.

Hello everyone, thank you for following along with how this miniature is turning out. So, I think the leather jacket/overcoat for the rider is done, I like the hair now, and I declare the pants finished, I worked a lot on them with the glaze technique. However, I didn't like the color of the armor, so I re-primed it to black. At the same time, I couldn't decide whether the armor and the weapon should be Non Metallic Metal or True Metallic Metal.

In this week's update I'll show you how I applied the sketch colors to the rider, these basic colors may still change in shade on the rider. But, overall, it's starting to take shape. You can see the detailed painting in the next update.

These are the smallest eyes I've ever painted, and I'm not 100% satisfied with the face painting yet, so I'm still working on it a little.

The hair color is not final yet, I was thinking of white hair, which would draw attention to the rider.

It's late at night so the lights aren't the best for the pictures time flew by today. So there were a few parts where the layerline was visible despite the varnish, so I sanded them down gently and basically repainted them, than I realized that the more yellowish green lights show up better on the beetle, so the effect is more contrasting.

I also started painting the rider, I started with the skin, I gave his clothes a little level just for the starting point, the shades and colors are not the finals. I originally planned it to be green, since he's a wood elf, but I think I'll shift it towards more brownish shades. Now comes the painting of the really small details and a final varnish. Meanwhile, I also started making the giant blades of grass.

In today's update, in one of the pictures I've already started painting the saddle, while i was put another white coat to the rider. One of the rules of painting is to work from the inside out so that the hard-to-reach parts are done first. This is just the base color for the saddle. In the meantime, I've started planning the base, I think I'll use this air-drying clay to make the mushrooms, you can see this clay in the other picture. Making the grass blades will be interesting and I don't know what material to use yet, since I've never done grass this large size before.

Painting miniatures is sometimes an experiment. The leaf beetle is naturally matte, but the colors I chose, especially the metallic colors, want to shine. They are really beautiful when they are varnished to a high gloss. So I used a semi-matte varnish for the first time, but after I realized that it wouldn't be good, I applied two more coats of the high gloss. This can be seen in the current picture, and since this is not the final varnish, and there are many bent back parts on the beetle's body that cannot be effectively sprayed, I applied the material with a brush instead.

The shapes are taking shape nicely. I sprayed chitin armor green on it, ( Almond Green) then a metallic purple,( Twilight Purple) I'll touch up a few more spots with a brush when it's completely dry, and I'll refine some of the greenish-yellow parts again. I think the beetle will be finished for the next update, so i can paint the rider.
