Project Summary

I’ll build this mostly out of the box using what’s there to extract as much detail as I can. I’ve never built a revel kit but heard good things about this one. I may add some parts bin stowage and self made soft stowage to fill out the interior.

Completed photos

This wraps up my Sd.Kfz 247 ausf.B heavy armored command car set in central Russia 1943. Basic construction is out of the box. I added radio cables, some resin stowage, epoxy tarp & rags, and wire antennas. It is painted with AK, Atom, Tamiya and vallejo paints then weathered with acrylics, oils, enamels and pigments. I used Gaahleri and H&S airbrushes.

I think it’s a really interesting subject and one not modeled very often. The kit itself is molded by ICM, reboxed by Revel. Overall the fit is very good although some assemblies are tricky & fragile. The biggest drawback is the vinyl tires, I’d much rather have plastic Instead.

Final stages

Getting near completion of the 247. I’ve painted up some stowage and added some epoxy putty soft stowage. Not pictured : notek lamp and fender poles are on, I’ve put in some antennas, and headlights will follow after the matte varnish. Might adjust the upper surface weathering but it’s about where I wanted it.

247 Weathering continues

I’ve finished weathering the chassis bottom to represent dry road dust. Today I attached the wheels and engine maintenance hatch. I added some loose earth inside the cabin corners & under the radio operators’ feet. Then I picked out a few bits of stowage gear and created some soft items in the form of a large tarp draped over the spare wheel, a small rag on the hood and a folded piece of whatever for a place to be determined. It’s easy and fun to me to create soft stowage from epoxy putty and the results are really nice once they’re painted up.

Weathering time

Now working on weathering the 247.

Got to keep the feet moving, only a few more weeks until due time.

I have a dusty appearance in mind. This is a base sprayed with amm dust. I’ve got an oil wash on the chassis and next up will be some splatters of a few earth colors. I might work on the upper hull some more.

Then some details to clutter up the interior later. Think I might make a rolled tarp to drape across the back too.

247 update

Update on the ‘247 This week was a bit slow. I got the gloss coat on and decals applied. The initial pin wash is done and drying. hoping I can get a satin varnish on the next couple days and start weathering. I’ll be using acrylics, gouaches and oils from here on.

Painting progression

Got the 247 into paint this week. Atom dunkelgrau first then lightened & post shaded by adding dark grey in several stages. Then today some field applied camouflage using AK real color RAL 8000. Pretty hard with all those odd angles but I’m quite pleased with the end result. I’m leaving the engine maintenance hatch and driver’s door open so they aren’t attached yet.

Sd.Kfz 247 Interior nearly done

Here I’ve done some wiring on the radio rack to busy it up. Not really accurate but based on a few photos and some “creative gizmology” it’s better looking than it was. Very fiddly though!

With that, the interior is basically done. i believe it’s ready for the upper hull now Then exterior details and primer!

Tire seams!!! Ugh

I gotta try to find a way to get rid of these horrible mold seams from the rubber tires. If I can’t then I’ll be forced to order aftermarket.

Sd.Kfz 247 interior work

I’ve got most of the interior components prepared. Just got everything painted and the bulk of it weathered in a bit. Maybe a little more work later, I’m not sure yet. most of it fit well but the front seats are very snug against the gear levers & handbrake. Not pictured: I’m trying to wire the radios to busy them up. They won’t be totally accurate but better than nothing. I drilled the hull side to wire the antenna as well. The radio rack assembly was the hardest part of construction so far. It’s very fragile and fiddly. Now I have to figure out mold seam removal on the rubber tires.

Blog day 2-3

Construction on the SdKfz 247 progress after three sessions. The chassis is very detailed with a lot of very fine & fragile parts. A litttle tricky, and one must pay close attention to the instructions to get everything oriented properly. But so far the fit has been very good if a bit vague in spots. I decided to leave the driver side door open so that will be one of the last parts to attach.

Biography

I spent a lot of time modeling from the 80s & 90s into the early 00s. Adulting took my time and I came back to the hobby in 2019. Been going strong since then and have started doing a few commission builds lately. I model armor & vehicles in 1/35 primarily. My favorite subjects are WW2 era.
