Project Summary

"The Jester's Final Wish" recreates the Marx Soul fight from Kirby Super Star Ultra as a physical diorama. The piece is built as an L. A painted backdrop panel stands vertical, and the arena floor runs out from its base with the hexagon platforms of the stage set into it. Marx spans the upper half of the backdrop. Sword Kirby stands on the platforms below him.

Marx is sculpted in Cosclay over tin foil and wire. His head begins as a foil ball under a layer of tan clay, with the mouth cut out of the front before any detail goes on. His eyes are translucent Cosclay, baked separately and fitted before the face is finished, which is what keeps them clear. The baked head then splits with a hand saw. With the foil out, the mouth and the brain cavity take their texture from the inside, worked over with ball styluses in several sizes.

The tongue is built over aluminum mesh so it can hang, and torn at the edge with flat tweezers rather than cut. The teeth and claws are translucent clay, rolled to a point and baked hard before they go in. The hat is a foil cone under clay, with a fabric texture pressed into the surface. The wings run on strong wire, drilled into his side and anchored through the backdrop board with two epoxy mounts on the reverse.

The paint is Army Painter's Fanatic line, brushed by hand over black primer. The skin goes down as Terrestrial Titan under Alien Purple, Hexed Violet and Warlock Magenta. Every layer is painted in crisscross lines, so the texture sits in the paint rather than in the clay.

The hat is stippled with a worn brush for a rough fabric surface, one half in plum and magenta and the other in blues. The mouth, the tongue and the cut faces of the head are wet blended at random from four flesh tones, so no two patches match.

The eyes finish under UV resin, cured over the iris as a lens and then poured over the whole eye. Gloss varnish goes on the wet surfaces only, which is what separates the flesh from everything around it.

Marx Soul from Kirby Super Star Ultra, sculpted in Cosclay and painted by hand.

His head is hollow. It started as a ball of tin foil under tan clay. I cut the smile out of the front, baked it, then cut the whole head in half with a small hand saw and pulled the foil out. That opened up the mouth and the brain cavity to sculpt from the inside, worked over with ball styluses until it stopped reading as clay.

The eyes are translucent Cosclay, baked on their own so they stay clear, then finished under UV resin cured over the iris as a lens. The tongue is built over aluminum mesh and torn at the edge with flat tweezers instead of cut. The wings run on strong wire drilled into his side and anchored through the backdrop board.

The skin texture comes from the painting. Every layer went on in crisscrossing lines, Terrestrial Titan under Alien Purple and Hexed Violet, Army Painter Fanatic throughout.
