Timeline Shift Week 09 - Masking Hell: Round 2
I’m back in the thick of it with the Schwarzette. If I’m being honest, pulling off layers of tape for the second time feels like a gamble—you’re always worried about what might lift or what edge might need a touch-up. But for this kit, I’m chasing a very specific kind of depth, and there just aren't any shortcuts. 😅
I’m currently layering Clear Purple over last week's Clear Orange base. Once masked, I added a thin layer of Metallic Blue Gray over the top, shifting the tone into what I’m calling "Chromatic Steel"—a finish that keeps the depth of a candy coat but grounds it in a cool, industrial metallic tone. It’s a subtle shift, but it’s the only way the upcoming Titan blues will sit right in the final composition.
This level of detail is a headache, and the masking is tedious, but it’s the only way to get the result I have in my head.
As usual, I’ve included my exact ratios as I don’t believe in keeping numbers under lock and key. The best part of this competition isn't the finish line; it’s the library of techniques we’re all building while we fight our way there. If these numbers save you an hour of trial and error at your own bench, then the struggle this week was well worth it. 🍻

@robperfido Thanks for the hype and support! 🙏😁 Happy to answer any specific questions. Each week I try to show my process (including recipes, ratios, and steps) along the way. Which part's piquing your interest?

@mechaassemblyexperience I had just discovered you on insta and going through your feeds. I like how you are using metallics and masking along with the recipes you add at end. If i had a question for you, 1) Do you lay down your base layer first and mask off where you will camo then finish everything else and come back to it or 2) just start a new layer sequence in your camo area after all base layers are done first? Did that make any sense? Lol

@robperfido Oh that's awesome, I appreciate the support on IG. :-) That said, for this project, I start with a metallic base (which in of itself was three layers), then I laid down the stencils, candy coated, and then spray some flats on top to add my highlights. Does that help? Happy to clarify. Thanks for the reply! 🙏

Mecha Assembly eXperience104 days ago@Neglected Gundam 💯! It's been a pillar of my personal brand since I started blogging about Gunpla. I figured that if you find something useful in my struggles then I've done my job, competition be damned! Win, Lose, or Draw, we're all here to learn something about our craft and, perhaps, learn a thing or two from one another. Thank you so much for the kind words, hype, and support. I really appreciate it. 🙏😁
