A question for fellow builders…
After assembling these photo-etched air intakes, I noticed something interesting.
The PE parts look incredibly sharp and scale-thin, but the vanes overlap enough that they don’t actually allow much airflow through them. The original plastic parts, while thicker, have open passages that are functionally closer to the real intake.
So here’s the question: Which would you choose—ultimate scale appearance or better functional accuracy?
I’m curious to hear how others approach this kind of trade-off.
My direction taken on this!
While the original plastic intakes are technically more open, the photo-etched parts bring a level of scale realism that's hard to ignore.
Sometimes the visual impact is worth a small compromise in functionality. That's the direction I'm taking with this Miura.

Andrzej Jaros100 days agoIn my opinion, photo-etched parts look more realistic, and those are the ones that will be used.

Mike101 days agoYea, sometimes even though plastic parts can be to thick a chunky. But photo etch parts can be to flat and under scale. This is where resin fits in. Sort of the best of both worlds. But if that is not an option, I think photo etch here for the appearance.

Bughunter101 days agoI try often combine kit parts with PE, but I don't know if that would be possible in this specific case.

@35th Scale Modeler Thanks so much! I really appreciate your thoughts. This is exactly why I enjoy being part of this community—we all see things from different perspectives and learn from each other. I think you're right, and in this case the photo-etched parts give the model a more realistic overall look. Thanks again!
