After the initial failure with the gloss varnish, which ruined the entire finish I had achieved and caused brake fluid to strip everything, I applied gray primer and repainted the entire exterior. This time I used A Stand gloss acrylic varnish from Ammo MIG, and everything worked perfectly. This is how the exterior turned out, ready for the decals... which I've already applied.
