Here's how it turned out. The pieces were glued together with cyanoacrylate; being plastic, they bond very well and strongly with that type of glue. The base structure is in place, although it's currently detached. Now, cyanoacrylate is applied so it adheres to the rest of the structure. Once it's firmly attached, the entire piece is masked off to prevent it from getting dirty during the subsequent painting of the base, and the spaces between the edges are filled with the same material as the terrain.
