Project Summary

This project aims to create a completely original podracer inspired by the Star Wars universe. Rather than building from an existing model kit, the vehicle will be designed and constructed entirely from scratch.

The goal is to develop a unique racing machine with its own visual identity, engineering language, and character while remaining believable within the aesthetic of the Star Wars galaxy. While inspired by the iconic podracers seen throughout the franchise, the project is not intended to replicate any existing vehicle.

A major focus will be placed on the engines, which are expected to define both the performance and personality of the racer. The design process will explore shapes, structures, and mechanical elements that suggest speed, power, and functionality while maintaining a distinctive appearance.

The build will combine a variety of materials and construction techniques. Everyday objects, plastic materials, and custom-fabricated components will be transformed into a cohesive machine through scratchbuilding, kitbashing, and creative problem-solving.

Throughout the project, attention will be given not only to the overall silhouette but also to the smaller details that help sell the illusion of a working vehicle. Surface textures, mechanical structures, maintenance panels, exposed components, and layered construction will all contribute to the final design.

Rather than following a predetermined blueprint, the project embraces an iterative design process, allowing the vehicle to evolve naturally as ideas, materials, and construction methods come together.

The ultimate objective is to create a one-of-a-kind podracer that feels as though it could exist somewhere within the Star Wars universe—an original racing machine with its own identity, history, and presence.

Scratchbuild Podracer Weathering complete

Weekly Update – Scratchbuilt Podracer

The weathering stage is now complete across both engines and the cockpit section.

Washes, atmospheric dirt, oils and subtle colour variation were used to break up the grey surfaces and bring out the scratchbuilt details, while keeping the overall appearance consistent across all three major components.

At this point I’m calling the vehicle weathering finished. Final sand and dust pigments will be added later, once everything is integrated into the display.

Next step will be the base itself, followed by the final positioning of the cockpit and engines and the scratchbuilt connection lines between them.

Slowly starting to look like a complete Podracer now.
