Through Time - Meet Jozef.
This week was better. For the first time in a while, I managed to spend some meaningful hours at the computer and begin the actual sculpting process. The first figure taking shape is the groom, Jozef. I've reached out to the family for additional photographs and references of his face. Portrait sculpting has never been my strongest skill, and recreating someone I've never met carries a certain weight. Still, I'll do my best to get as close to the real man as possible. That's what this project is about. So, meet Jozef. As a teenager, he survived the Second World War. Like many young men of his generation, he was later pulled into the realities of life behind the Iron Curtain. He completed his mandatory military service under the communist regime, only to find himself viewed with suspicion by the very party he was expected to support. Ironically, they eventually branded him a spy, expelled him from the party, and redirected his path. Drawing on his studies in rope making, he spent most of his adult life working as a shipbuilder. Yet every family story I've heard about him has little to do with politics, war, or work. People remember his personality. He was charismatic, outgoing, always ready with a joke, and rarely took life too seriously. He loved spending time in his vineyard and took great pride in producing his own wine, perhaps even more pride in drinking it with family and friends. As I sculpt his face, I'm realizing that likeness is only part of the challenge. The harder task is capturing a little of the man behind it. One step at a time. 🤍 #thanks
