Phase 2: Scribing – In Progress. Week 8

This week progress:

  • Progressed with scribing on the Zaku’s legs and a bit on the chest.
  • Cut and fused part of the arm joint using extra thin cement, then sanded it to make the assembly look more realistic.
  • If possible, I’ll try to finish this entire phase next week so I can start priming the Rick Dom and the Zaku.

Nice job with scribing. What scriber(s) do you use?

@cristiancarlone Thanks Cris, I’m using the DSPIAE Dawning Tungsten Steel Push Broach 0.125 mm and a generic Chinese 5‑in‑1 Model Scriber (Model MS‑012, 0.2 mm–0.4 mm) that I found on AliExpress.

@josephsong, thank you for the detailed answer. How do you like the DSPIAE ones? Do you recommend them?

@cristiancarlone The DSPIAE tools are quite good — with just a few passes they define lines very well and are very precise compared to the other generic ones, which require more strokes and better control. If you’re working in 1/144 scale, the 0.1 mm / 0.125 mm / 0.2 mm sizes are recommended. For 1/100 scale, start from 0.15 mm / 0.2 mm upwards. The cons: they’re fairly expensive, around $10–$15 depending on where you live, and very delicate — you need to handle them carefully and gently, without pressing too hard or they can break (it already happened to me with another brand, Ustar, also Chinese). Note: you need to buy the broach holder separately for a comfortable grip. (I’m currently using the holder from the one that broke, but I recommend DSPIAE’s own holders). If you want to start practicing scribing without spending too much, I recommend the generic Chinese set — they’re more durable and accessible, but less precise, about $35 for five different sizes plus the holder included.

@josephsong, thank you so much! Your answer is extremely useful. I already own a set of generic scriber with a handle I bought time ago on Temu or Ali express. They are ok, but fragile (i broke one shortly after using it for the first time), and I’m looking at a better quality set. I’ll keep your good advice in mind! Thank you again!
