A hectic unsatisfying week!

10 August 2026.

This week has been exceptionally frustrating! I have made two critical promises to myself – firstly; never build a WW1 aircraft again. Secondly; never buy an Academy kit again. This kit came with beautiful plastic mouldings that fitted remarkably well. However – the manufacturers should have paid more attention to research into their subject. Up to now I have found numerous errors that are just inexcusable. But this week I came upon just the worst one! The two Vickers machine-guns are 180 degrees wrong! If I was to mount them as shown in the instructions the would have been ‘up-side-down’. That was not all, their detail was totally wrong, according to reference photos, and I had to do much work on them to get them to look ‘almost’ right. The other problem, which I mentioned before, was the rigging. The thread supplied is not suitable. In scale it would look as if all the bracing wires were frayed. I tried copper wire from electric cables – without success. I tried stretched sprue – without success. I tried a special thin wire that came on a spool – without success. Then I went to my hobby shop and bought 0.3 diameter brass rod – and so far it is working! But the time I spent trying to get this solution may put me out of this competition. I also did some weathering, which turned out okay.

Somsorry about all the troubles you have been through on this kit. Hang in there and your perseverance will pay off and you’ll submit you beautiful plane to the competition! P.s. your experience convinced me even more to never build a WWI plane 😉

Sorry to hear about your week! Never build a WW1 aircraft again? Really pity, as I love those biplanes. Yeah, I must admit that this area is a mine field of potential problems and mistakes. (E.g. the Sopwith Camel was rigged in real with "RAF wires", which are flat aero dynamical shaped steel bars sitting in terminals. No turnbuckles!) This could only be solved by learning with every new model, study references and learn from others. In your preferred scale WingNut Wing created nice models, but they are out of business which causes crazy high prices for remaining kits.

@bughunter The problem is that I struggled to get a suitable wire - let alone a flat aerodinamic wire. Maybe oneday I will attempt another biplane from a reputable manufacturer. Unfortunately the Camel that I have is so far from perfect, in fact it has few redeeming features. But I guess I can't look a gift horse in the mouth - I picked it up at our club for R50:00 (about US$3). At my age (70), I have a stash of kits in my cupboard that will take me the rest of my life to build, so I don't think I will be buying any kit again.
